Demographic survey questions

Demographic questions can support representation and segmentation, but they can also identify people or create unnecessary risk. Ask only what the analysis needs and explain why sensitive categories are collected.

Choose necessary characteristics

Use inclusive, locally appropriate categories and the least precision required. Consider ranges instead of exact age, broader areas instead of addresses, and self-description where fixed categories may exclude people.

  • Link each field to analysis
  • Include prefer not to say where appropriate
  • Use non-overlapping ranges

Protect small groups

Demographic combinations may re-identify respondents even without names. Suppress very small segments, restrict raw-data access, and avoid publishing cross-tabs that expose individuals.

  • Set reporting thresholds
  • Minimise geographic precision
  • Review combinations for re-identification
